Calvi dell’Umbria

The infinite shades of green

Calvi dell’Umbria is a small medieval town at the foot of mount San Pancrazio in southern Umbria on the border with Lazio.
From the top of the rock on which it is situated, Calvi offers magnificient views of woods, valleys, fields and vineyards that stretch from the nearby mountains down to the Tiber Valley.

History of the territory

The first archeological findings in the territory date back to the Bronze age, but the fortified settlement that we now call Calvi developed around the year one thousand. Administrative documents of the era talk about a “fundus Carbinianus”. During the medieval period, numerous agricultural and particularly many religious settlements arose around the castle. Between the 15th and 19th centuries Calvi became part of the Papal States and enjoyed relative administrative autonomy as well as many years of peaceful prosperity. However, Calvi did not entirely escape the events of those troubled centuries in Italy. In 1527 the castle was besieged and devastated by the Lanzichenecchi family and in 1798 by French soldiers marching towards Rome. In 1827 the territory was permanently assigned to the administrative control of Umbria, becoming part of unified Italy with the plebiscite of 1860.
The territory of Calvi is a succession of unspoiled woods and rolling hills down to the valley of the Tiber. It is a natural landscape, constantly changing its colors with the natural cycles of the seasons. Vineyards, forests, pine, oak trees, olive groves and vineyards, make it a green oasis where you can still find moments of quiet and simplicity of life no longer possible in the densely urbanized areas of today.
For those traveling from Rome to the Marmore waterfalls, Calvi dell’Umbria can be a relaxing stopover offering genuine food and wine.
